6 Of Family Commit Suicide In Tamil Nadu's Madurai

Chennai:  Six members of a family that runs a school have committed suicide in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai allegedly because of being unable to pay back debts, officials said on Sunday. Three of them are women. Two others have been rescued and are being treated.

Investigators have recovered a suicide note that indicates the family was under stress after defaulting on a loan. Madurai Police Commissioner Mahesh Kumar Agarwal said, “In the suicide note, the family has also asked authorities to dispose their property and settle their dues. There’s no information on who they owe money. We are investigating.”

Madurai is notorious for usury, which the state government has banned.

Neighbours have reported to officials that the ambulance arrived late. Otherwise, they believe a few more could have been saved. However District Collector K Veera Raghava Rao said, “We have asked the 108 (ambulance) operator to explain. In Madurai, 108 service is quite good and we’ve saved several lives. We would probe and take action in this case.”
